Fishing Force.

Since its start-up in 1971, the Armement Coopératif Artisanal du Nord (ACANOR) has enabled the construction of more than 50 small-scale catcher vessels. The purpose of ACANOR is to facilitate the construction of new small-scale catcher vessels when a new company starts up, or when the small-scale fishing flotilla is renovated. When a shipowner-operator has a project, ACANOR studies its economic and operational feasibility, sets up the financing (piggy-back) and oversees the start-up and management of the project in association with the skipper. A Small-scale Fishing Management Group approved by the circular from the French Secretary of State for the Sea dated 24 June 1986, further assignments of the ACANOR are to manage the operations of ships in the Small-Scale Fishing Flotilla, and to provide economic, financial, fiscal and legal advice, and support for shipowner-operators in the event of difficulties.
A major mission!

More than 50 ships have been built under the auspices of the ACANOR Shipowners' Co-operative, and more than 90 ships are group members for their accounting and business management requirements. Every day, the ten members of the staff provide back-up and support for shipowner-operators in the management and operation of their catcher vessels.

Together with its human and material resources, the ACANOR Shipowners' Co-operative serves its members in the following ways:
  • By enabling fishermen to become owners of catcher vessels, particularly when the skippers are young and need technical assistance and piggy-back financing,

  • By ensuring the small-scale fishing flotilla is renewed,

  • By providing on-going technical assistance for shipowner-operators,

  • By managing both the accounts and finance of member operations, by advising them with regard to business, tax and legal issues, and to provide skippers with the requisite means to enable proper management of their fishing business (as an approved Small-scale Fishing Management Group)

  • By supporting small-scale fishing.

Through its shipping and shipowner management work, ACANOR is a major source of support for local small-scale fishing, thereby enabling its balanced development.
