Fishing Forward !

- The Etaples Shipping Co-operative and Producers Organisation (CME) comprises a balanced series of units (11 to date) dedicated to the valuation of small-scale fishing. Our highly diversified activities provide a complete line of services and products, but in which quality and freshness are constant concerns. Working with our group means being part of an organisation of professional seamen and women, with common values and aims.
The CME small-scale fishing flotilla comprises more than 80 craft, using a wide range of fishing expertise, techniques and catcher vessels, including stern trawlers 9 to 26 metres in length, trammelers, and trappers. The fishing times (tides) are short - from 24 to 72 hours - to ensure maximum freshness for the catch, landed mainly in the Capécure harbour of Boulogne-sur-Mer or in the home port of Etaples-sur-Mer, where fishing is a long-standing tradition. The flotilla limits its fishing effort with one day off per week. The small-scale flotilla works the Channel and the North Sea (zones 4C, 7D and 7E of the CIEM), fishing as always, but with constant concern for optimum quality to satisfy customers and consumers alike.

- Each year the 80 ships of our Small-Scale Flotilla catch 25,000 tons of fresh seafood, generating sales worth FF 240 million. The flotilla creates direct employment for more than 500 fishermen and indirect employment for a large number of people on shore as service providers and valuators. A vessel can catch nearly 30 different species in a year. More than 50% of the local seafood products sold by auction in Boulogne-sur-Mer are caught by the CME shipowner-operators.
The products are processed on-site by fish traders and mongers, and by the deep-freezing, canning and salting industries, making Boulogne-sur-Mer the leading fishing port in France (60,000 tons) and the number one centre in Europe for processing seafood (300,000 tons).

The Etaples Shipping Co-operative and Producers Organisation (CME) comprises 11 units and a complete range of service providers, generating total annual sales of some FF 500 million together with the small-scale fishing flotilla, and a headcount of 700. Our group is a major economic actor in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Etaples-sur-Mer and the North Pas-de-Calais region as a whole. As a Producers Organisation, our group is an active member in the French Shipping Co-operative.

The Etaples Shipping Co-operative and Producers Organisation (CME) has highly diversified activities to valuate small-scale fishing, available to all the operators in the fishing industry and to the public at large:

- management and valuation of small-scale fishing (Producers Organisation)

Since 1958, we have been working as one to expand together, and if our business has developed so briskly, it is thanks to the close collaboration with all our associates involved in small-scale fishing, and the interest of local men and women in the sea. Our activities are the reflection of our determination to satisfy our co-workers, customers and consumers alike, and serve the interests of the North Pas-de-Calais region and the Opal Coast.
